Choosing and laying paving in Nerja and Maro

In shortIn Nerja, at the eastern end of the Málaga coastline in the Axarquía, we lay new paving and replace old outdoor surfaces, including in Maro. Many owners here weigh up the look first: natural stone, clay or concrete pavers. We help you choose by use and maintenance as well as appearance, then build the base properly and quote every stage in writing, in English.

Which paving material suits a house in Nerja?

The one that matches how the area is used and the style of the house. Nerja sits where the Senda Litoral, the coastal path across the province, ends on its eastern side, and Maro is part of the municipality. Properties vary from village houses to modern villas, so the answer is rarely the same twice.

MaterialCharacterGood to know
Concrete block pavingWidest range of formats and coloursSurface colour can soften with years of use; good for drives
Natural stone setts and slabsTraditional, varied tonesMore cutting and fitting; check the stone suits outdoor use
Clay paversWarm colour through the whole pieceChoose thicker units if cars will drive on them
Permeable paving or grass gridsLets water soak throughNeeds a free-draining base

The table is a starting point, not a verdict. Our comparison of paving materials goes further and names the European standard each product type should meet, from UNE-EN 1338 for concrete blocks to UNE-EN 1344 for clay pavers.

Maintenance is part of the decision too. Natural stone with an open texture holds dirt more than a smooth concrete face, light colours show stains from leaves and barbecues sooner, and very dark pavers can feel hot underfoot in summer sun. None of these rules out a material; they simply help you choose with open eyes.

Does a whitewashed village house need special paving?

Not necessarily, but if your house has a traditional character, grey concrete can look out of place. Many owners in that situation consider clay pavers or natural stone in warm tones for entrances, patios and steps. For a contemporary villa, smooth large-format concrete blocks in a single colour often look cleaner.

If the house is in a protected area or an old centre, the town hall may impose criteria on materials. Check this with the planning department before choosing, giving them your exact address.

Mixing materials is another option: a clay or stone border framing a concrete field, or stone steps between concrete landings, gives character without the cost of doing everything in the premium material.

How do you work with owners who are not in Nerja?

We start from photos and measurements you or a neighbour send, then arrange a visit with whoever holds the keys. You approve the material from sample photos and, if you want, from real samples left at the house. During the work you receive pictures at the main stages; at the end, a full set of the finished surface. Payment terms and dates are fixed in the written quote.

Before work starts we also ask you to confirm anything hidden under the area: water pipes, irrigation, cables for garden lights or a gate motor, a cistern or a septic tank. If you are not sure, your key holder or a previous builder may know, and we dig carefully near any suspected line.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work in Maro as well as Nerja town?

Yes. Maro is part of the municipality of Nerja and within our working area. We plan each job around the property's access, whichever part of the municipality it is in.

Is natural stone or clay better for a patio in Nerja?

Both work for patios. Stone offers natural variation and a traditional feel; clay keeps a warm, even colour through the piece. The choice usually comes down to style, budget and how much cutting the layout needs.

Do concrete pavers lose their colour?

The surface of a concrete paver can soften in tone over the years with sun, wear and cleaning. Pavers with a quality top layer hold their appearance better, and through-coloured clay avoids the issue altogether.

Can I see real samples before deciding?

Yes. We can bring or leave a few sample pieces at the property so you, a neighbour or your key holder can see them in natural light. Photos of the samples on site can also be sent to you.

Are there rules on paving materials in older parts of Nerja?

In protected areas or historic centres, the town hall may set requirements for visible materials. Check with the planning department before choosing; we cannot confirm the rules for a given address without that check.

What standards should paving products meet?

Concrete paving blocks follow UNE-EN 1338, natural stone setts UNE-EN 1342, natural stone slabs UNE-EN 1341 and clay pavers UNE-EN 1344. We use products supplied under those standards.

Can you lay paving on a steep village street access?

Usually, yes, with materials delivered in smaller loads and moved by hand truck. A steep or narrow access adds labour but rarely prevents the work. Photos of the route help us plan it.

How do I approve the job if I live abroad?

We send a written quote in English with each stage itemised. You confirm by email, we agree dates with your key holder and you receive photo updates until the work is finished.

Can you repave around an existing well, tree or planter?

Yes. We cut the paving neatly around fixed features and leave a gap around tree trunks so roots can breathe and the paving is not lifted as the tree grows.

Is a permit needed for paving in Nerja?

The procedure depends on the current ordinance in Nerja, which the town hall can confirm. Many minor private works in Andalusia are handled by a responsible declaration; anything on the public pavement needs separate authorisation.
